6 Essential Portrait Photography Techniques and Tips

Jan 30

What is Portrait Photography?

Portrait photography is a form of photography that shows human subjects. Portrait photography was invented by Louis Daguerre in 1839. This year, Robert Cornelius took the widely-respected first self-portrait (or "selfie") ever taken. This laid the foundation for las Vegas photography.

Here are some photography tips that can enhance your photos and enhance your portraits.

Diffuse your light source

Consider that portraits are best photographed with soft, diffused light which is indirect. Contrary to popular opinion direct sunlight or full sunlight can cause undesirable shadows and unnatural colors. To soften the light and create a flattering effect, use diffusers like a softbox or white sheets.

Use a longer lens

A 50mm lens is a mid-range telephoto. It's the standard length that a lot of portrait photographers in Las Vegas like to use. This length can create an uninspiring, but extraordinary scene. Use a longer lens, like one in the 85mm-200mm range, to produce more efficient image compression, without distorting the pixels. A longer focal length can draw your background closer to your subject, increasing bokeh (background blur) and creating a more dynamic image.

Try a new position

You can add new perspectives to your photographs by breaking the rule of thirds by taking pictures at angles that aren't quite as well-composed, or even at the subject's eye level. Photographs can be taken from different angles and different distances from the model. Photograph from an aerial view or from a side angle, change up your models' poses or shoot candidly to find the most flattering angle for the portrait.

Make your own lighting

While the camera's flash can be important for bringing light into your photos, it can not always be sufficient. Flashes can make a person's face appear unnatural and washed out especially for close-up headshots. Off-camera flashes are useful for altering the lighting conditions to increase contrast control shadows of your portraits and make them visually attractive and lively. Puretouch Photography suggests natural light for outdoor portraits, but direct sunlight can sometimes cause problems. External strobe lighting can be used to reduce the amount of light available and achieve the perfect photograph by making your own lighting.

Adjust the Aperture

Wide apertures create an elongated depth of field, blurring the background and making your subject the center of attention. If, however, you have multiple subjects (like an image of a family) an aperture that is smaller keeps everyone in the focus.

End with editing and post-processing

Enhance your photographs with editing software to give them that perfect look. You can trim unwanted edges, remove shadows that cause distraction, or change the background.
